“This is an excellent course. I was able to immediately add several of the options to my lasso-spider guard effectively.”
This is an honest 5-star review written by one student who is currently taking Nathalie’s course, “Into The Spider-verse.”
Who is Nathalie Ribeiro?
Nathalie Ribeiro, also known as Tata Ribeiro, is a professional black belt jiu jitsu competitor from Team Checkmat. She was born on November 6, 1992, in Brazil. Starting her jiu jitsu journey at age 8, she has built tons of experience to lead her to where she is now. Not only has she achieved multiple wins participating in the world-class competition as a color belt, she established her reputation as a top-tier black belt competitor by winning IBJJF Pans (2021,2022), the IBJJF European Open (2022), and many other major events.
Do you panic when your opponent stands up and starts tearing your guard apart?
You think you know how to apply the closed guard or half guard techniques that you learned in class, but somehow your opponent keeps getting the best of you. Suddenly, all you're able to do is panic and try to prevent them from passing your guard.
Closed guard and half guard are core positions in jiu jitsu, often taught at the white belt level. They will always have their place in jiu jitsu and can be effective in their own right. But there will always be situations where something else will work better, and in the case of the scenario described above, open guard is the solution. What you may be missing is proper distance control. Once your closed guard falls apart, you must establish control over our training partners and opponents. With jiu jitsu’s recent evolution of many people trying to pass guards standing, the open guard has been getting much more attention than ever.
Let Nathalie help you!
Regardless of your skill level, if you have felt like you want to be a more offensive guard player, Nathalie is the perfect instructor to help you. Although she has a terrific overall game, “Spider Lasso guard” is one of her specialties, from which she executes lots of sweeps and submissions.
The Spider Lasso guard is a hybrid open guard consisting of a spider guard and lasso guard. In Nathalie’s course “Into the Spider-verse,” you will explore guidelines to retain your guard in any situation. You'll have your training partners feeling like puppets - unable to get out of your guard and unable to pass it! The guard retention chapters also provide multiple ways to defend and counter passing styles, like the toreando pass.
One of the countless benefits spider lasso guard offers is variations of submission and sweep sequences. Here are some of the series you will be reviewing with Nathalie in her course:
Multiple entries to Triangle
Omoplata variations
Varieties of sweeps to counter any defense
Nathalie’s signature sweep
Pendulum sweep
Entry to the straight ankle lock
Tripod sweep variations
And there’s more! Beyond the benefits already highlighted, Spider Lasso guard also provides opportunities to transition to other offensive guards. These include X guard and single leg X. Sweeps and submissions are essential when it comes to jiu jitsu, but knowing when to transition to maximize your offense is a skill that tends to get underestimated.
With Nathalie's expert instruction, you can go ahead and consider yourself an adept marionette, able to orchestrate your puppets to your will! Make them regret thinking passing your guard will be easy.
