How PJ Getting Choked Out Over and Over Will Make YOUR Jiu Jitsu Better
PJ Barch has been on the receiving end of plenty of submissions. That’s just how you get good at something - first you have to struggle. And tenacity pays off. Despite his claims of spending “countless hours getting submitted and getting choked out” earlier in his training, he is now well known for his prowess in both wrestling and no-gi jiu jitsu.
He’s been a coach with 10th Planet for several years now, where his students have the benefit of learning from his experiences. With Takedown Counter Submissions, you have the opportunity to do the same.
You Don’t Have to Give Up on Wrestling
One of PJ’s main goals in teaching is to save you time. You don’t have to spend years learning what works and what doesn’t. He’s done that for you.
With his course here on Jiu Jitsu X, he specifically wants to “save you guys a little bit of time, and heartache to the point where you’re convinced like ‘wrestling is not my thing, I’m just gonna get messed up there’, and giving you answers.”
You Can Get a Takedown Without Worrying About Being Submitted
It’s the worst when you set up a great takedown, and feel like you have the advantage over your opponent, only to end up in a less than desirable position.
That’s why, as PJ says, it’s important to “understand the goals of the person trying to submit [you] in order to truly understand the defense.”
This is precisely why PJ’s course is broken into two sections: attacks and defense.
You’ll spend the first half of the course getting into the mind of the opponent and learning to recognize the motivations behind every detail of their technique. Why are they using that grip? Why are they zeroing in on this particular limb? Should I be concerned?
The second half of the course answers all these questions and more.
You’ll also be able to use the first half of the course - the attacks - against people who haven’t caught on and learned the defenses like you! We’ll leave it up to you whether you share the knowledge or not.
Why You Should Want to Learn from PJ
PJ has an impressive 54 wins, 37 of which are by submission and 7 of which are by points. He worked hard to achieve that record.
Born in Pittsburg, but growing up in Delaware, PJ eventually attended the University of Pennsylvania. He was recognized as an All American wrestler in high school and continued with the sport in college. After a few semesters of college, Barch decided to move to Hawaii, which is where he attended his first jiu jitsu class at BJ Penn’s academy in Hilo.
From there, he trained with Nate Orchard in Portland and Magnus Hansson in Sweden before arriving in San Diego, CA to learn under Richie Martinez. He earned his black belt in 2016 and won at several events over the next few years: two Onnit Invitationals, Sapateiro, Subversiv, Polaris, No-Gi Worlds, and the ADCC East Coast Trials.
With wrestling in jiu jitsu becoming an increasingly important part of training, learning from someone with years of experience in both should be a priority.
