White belts are extraterrestrial beings that come from the planet of wrong belt ties, awkward encounters and inappropriate use of finger jabs to the eyeballs. However, contrary to popular belief, white belts do have souls and it’s time we here at JiuJitsuX.com gave a helping hand by letting you in on the unwritten rules every jiu jitsu beginner needs to know.
Walking into a jiu jitsu gym can be intimidating. BUT what’s even worse is not sticking to the invisible mat rules and having to hear the sneaky snickering from your fellow jiu jitsu peers. All while you’re desperately trying to convince yourself they’re not laughing at you. It all very quickly, becomes a high school clique.
Where do I find these rules?
Simple answer, you don’t. Most gyms don’t provide you with a white belt guidebook when you join. So it might be slightly difficult to make yourself acquainted with the mystical rules of your gym, unless you break them.
Fortunately, Keenan & Andris Brunovskis (Assistant Head Instructor and Beginner Program Director at Legion HQ) have released what is basically a short instructional on what not to do (and what to do) as a white belt. Gyms have rules specific to their own facilities. However, these are some universal rules that often go unmentioned and when broken it can be considered “a 🍆 move”. Check it out below.
Here’s some beginner friendly courses below, brought to you by experts in the jiu jitsu teaching field. Enroll today and get a headstart on improving your jiu jitsu capabilities faster than your fellow white belts.
